Associate Justice Lee A. Solomon

Early Life and Education

Lee A. Solomon was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he attended public schools before pursuing higher education at Muhlenberg College, earning his bachelor’s degree in 1975. He later obtained his Juris Doctor from Widener University School of Law in 1978, laying the groundwork for a career that would blend law, public service, and judicial leadership.

Public Service and Political Career

Before joining the judiciary, Solomon built a distinguished record of public service. He served on the Haddon Heights Borough Council, the Camden County Board of Freeholders, and for five years as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly. His early legislative experience shaped his understanding of state governance and the balance between lawmaking and judicial interpretation.

Judicial Career

Justice Solomon was first appointed to the bench in 2006 by Acting Governor Richard J. Codey. He served in both the Family and Criminal Divisions of the Camden Vicinage, earning respect for his balanced judgment and leadership.

In 2010, he briefly left the judiciary when Governor Chris Christie appointed him as President of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU), where he guided key energy and regulatory initiatives. He returned to the bench in 2011 and was later appointed Presiding Judge of the Criminal Division in 2013, followed by his promotion to Assignment Judge by Chief Justice Stuart Rabner.

Governor Christie nominated Solomon to the New Jersey Supreme Court in 2014, where he continues to serve as Associate Justice. His judicial philosophy reflects integrity, independence, and commitment to fair governance.

Additional Roles and Personal Life

Before his Supreme Court appointment, Solomon served as Deputy U.S. Attorney for the southern vicinages of New Jersey and as Camden County Prosecutor. He is married and the father of three children.
