Early Life and Education
Fabiana Pierre‑Louis was born on September 9, 1980, in New York City to Haitian immigrant parents. Her family settled in Irvington, New Jersey, when she was eight. She earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from Rutgers University–New Brunswick and graduated magna cum laude from Rutgers Law School–Camden, where she held leadership roles including vice president of the Black Law Students Association.
Early Legal Career
Immediately after law school, Pierre‑Louis served as a law clerk to Justice John E. Wallace Jr. of the New Jersey Supreme Court. She then joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey, working for nearly nine years and becoming the first woman of color to lead the Trenton and Camden offices. Later, she became a partner at Montgomery, McCracken, Walker & Rhoads LLP, focusing on complex commercial litigation, white-collar crime, and government investigations.
Appointment to the New Jersey Supreme Court
Nominated by Governor Phil Murphy on June 5, 2020, Pierre‑Louis was confirmed unanimously by the New Jersey Senate and sworn in as an associate justice on September 1, 2020. She is the first Black woman to serve on the state’s highest court and was the youngest justice to take office at age 39.
