Associate Justice Faustino J. Fernandez-Vina

Early Life and Education

Faustino J. Fernandez-Vina was born on February 15, 1952, in Santiago, Cuba. His family immigrated to the United States when he was a child, eventually settling in New Jersey. Fernandez-Vina attended Widener University, earning his Bachelor’s degree in 1974, and later received his Juris Doctor from Rutgers School of Law–Camden in 1978.

Early Legal Career

Before joining the judiciary, Fernandez-Vina built a successful career as a trial attorney in Camden County, focusing on civil litigation and insurance defense. His reputation for thorough preparation and balanced advocacy earned him leadership positions in the Camden County Bar Association and the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Civil Practice Committee.

Judicial Career

Appointed to the New Jersey Superior Court in 2004, Fernandez-Vina served in the Civil Division in Camden County before becoming the Assignment Judge for the vicinage. His administrative skill and deep trial experience prepared him for higher judicial service.

In 2013, Governor Chris Christie appointed him as an Associate Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court. On the state’s highest court, Fernandez-Vina authored opinions on a wide range of issues, including civil procedure, contract disputes, and insurance law. His writing style was clear, methodical, and grounded in practical application of the law.

Legacy

Justice Fernandez-Vina retired from the bench in February 2022, concluding nearly two decades of judicial service. He is remembered for his professionalism, collegiality, and commitment to ensuring fairness in both civil and criminal proceedings.
