Philip Dunton Murphy was born on August 16, 1957, in Needham, Massachusetts, into a middle-class family that valued education, hard work, and civic duty. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University and later completed an MBA at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Murphy began his professional career at Goldman Sachs, where he held various leadership roles and gained international experience in Germany and Hong Kong. His global outlook deepened when he was appointed United States Ambassador to Germany under President Barack Obama (2009–2013).
