Robert Baumle Meyner was born on July 3, 1908, in Easton, Pennsylvania, and raised in Phillipsburg, New Jersey. He attended Lafayette College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in government and law in 1930, and later graduated from Columbia Law School in 1933. His academic background in law and governance laid the foundation for a distinguished public service career.
Early Career and Political Rise
Meyner began practicing law in Phillipsburg but soon entered politics. He served in the New Jersey State Senate from 1948 to 1951, where he developed a reputation for honesty and reform-minded leadership. Although he lost the 1950 congressional race, his dedication to public service remained unwavering.
Governorship
In 1953, Meyner was elected as the 44th Governor of New Jersey, becoming the first Democrat to hold the office in 16 years. He served two terms, from 1954 to 1962, and focused on improving ethics in government, modernizing state administration, and expanding public education. He supported infrastructure growth, the creation of new state parks, and the strengthening of environmental protections.
